Why You Should Visit the Daintree Rainforest in Spring

Spring marks the start of the warmer, wet season in northern Queensland when the local flora and fauna of the Daintree Rainforest adapt to the changing climate. Along with these changes are sights you wouldn’t want to miss especially if you are planning to visit the Daintree September through November.

Heres a list of some of the many things that happen in the Daintree spring:

Birds flock to nest
Different bird species come to the Daintree to build their nests and mate. Some of these birds are migratory visitors avoiding the cold winter from the upper hemisphere. This makes the Daintree a hotspot for bird watchers and wildlife photographers. This is also the time when the Buff Breasted Kingfisher arrives from New Guinea. These birds have become famous due to their distinct mating calls heard during the morning hours.

Big Barramundi build up
This is the start of the barramundi breeding season. During this time, large female barramundi can be spotted at billabongs, river mouths and estuaries taking advantage of the warm waters to reproduce. You can easily catch them by flicking lures and flies among the aquatic vegetation where they reside.

Orchids bloom
Walking tours inside the forest get more colourful and fragrant once the wet season arrives. Numerous varieties of wild orchids begin to bloom from tree branches. Among these delicate blossoms is the Pencil Orchid - its bloom is considered an indication of the start of spring. Just remember to avoid picking these flowers as most of them are considered endangered and are protected by law.

Migration in the Great Barrier Reef
The warm Pacific waters attract many sea creatures who are migrating from colder regions. The coral reefs become busy spawning grounds for different fish varieties. Humpback whales can also be spotted passing through the reef on their annual migration from Antarctic waters. If you are lucky enough, you might even get a glimpse of the Migaloo humpback whale.

Spring is definitely a perfect time to go on a trip and visit northern Australia. For a local Daintree Rainforest accommodation to truly experience these amazing springtime wonders.
